President Carrie Chapman Catt proposed the creation of a "league of women voters to finish the fight and aid in the reconstruction of the nation." The next year, on February 14, 1920 - six months before the 19th amendment to the Constitution was ratified - the League was formally organized in Chicago as the national League of Women Voters.
The League of Women Voters of Berks County is still providing information to voters on candidates and issues and we are still registering voters. The League sponsors a national database for candidate information. Vote411.org offers voters the information they need to make informed choices when they vote.
The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 after women won the right to vote in the US.
The League of Women Voters of Berks County was charted in 1943. The league has been active in Berks County for 80 years. In past years, the League has produced a printed Voter’s Guide and sponsored candidate interviews and forums.
Join the League and help us continue our work, empowering voters and defending democracy!
